Here are some of the best cheap Android smartphones to buy this holiday season

In our Android Phone Guide, we rank the top 10 best phones you can buy. These rankings are constantly updated when new phones are released. It’s a great place to look if you’re trying to find the best of the best, but what if you don’t need the absolute best? What if you just want an affordable phone that won’t make you pull your hair out?

As a companion to the Best Android Phones, we’ve created a list for the Best Cheap Android Phones. These phones won’t break the bank, but they will provide a pleasant experience.

1. ZTE Axon 7

For $399, ZTE is bringing the first Daydream-ready smartphone on the market, which means it can take advantage of Google’s latest vision for VR. That’s not just marketing speak, either, as Daydream phones have some serious requirements to be called such, the most consistent of which are the inclusion of a Snapdragon 820 chipset, 4GB of RAM, and a 5.5-inch 2560 x 1440 display. Bonus points for shipping

Price: $399

Key Features:

Beautiful design
Great internals
Daydream-ready

2. OnePlus 3

The OnePlus 3 is one of the best values you’ll find in a smartphone. It’s hard for other phones to match its price point for the features and specs you’re getting. Highlights include a full metal unibody design, 5.5-inch 1080p display, Snapdragon 820 chipset, 6GB of RAM, NFC, 64GB of storage, 16-megapixel rear camera and more. Combine all of that with the increasingly polished Oxygen OS (and the ability to flash something else if you don’t fancy that) and it’s hard to argue that it’s the best sub-$400 phone you’ll find.

Price: $399

Key Features

Great battery life
Full-metal design
Snapdragon 820 and 6GB of RAM
BUY FROM ONEPLUS
3. honor 5X

Sexy design, slick hardware features, and insanely low entry fee will draw in consumers, but the price tag shows its face in the form of a slow processor and muddled UI. Even with those flaws, the honor 5x is arguably the best entry level phone on the planet.

Price: $199

Key Features

Awesome display
Great battery life
Fingerprint sensor

4. Nexus 5X

Android fans have been begging for a sequel to the Nexus 5 for years. They finally got it with the Nexus 5X. It’s not quite as handsome as the original, but LG has improved upon nearly everything that made the Nexus 5 so loved. The camera has been improved, and battery life is much better. The Nexus 5X isn’t the cheapest phone on this list, but it’s still one of the most affordable ways to get Android Marshmallow in your hands.

Price: $240-299

Key Features:

Much improved camera
Android Marshmallow
Fingerprint scanner

5. Moto G4

The original Moto G was one of the first phones to show that affordable devices don’t have to be bad. Motorola followed up that phone with another great device. 7. Moto X Pure Edition

The Moto X Pure Edition is not considered a “cheap phone.” It has been ranked as high as #5 on our Best Android Phones list. The Moto X Pure is Motorola’s flagship phone, but it undercuts nearly every other device in the flagship category, sometimes by several hundred dollars. It’s certainly not the cheapest phone on this list, but it’s not the most expensive either. Motorola once again shows that a great phone doesn’t have to cost and arm and a leg.

Price: $299

8. Asus Zenfone 3

The ASUS ZenFone 2 was one of the best smartphones available in 2015 for its starting price of around $200, so it only stands to reason that the ZenFone 3 is a direct and marked improvement. It boasts a spacious 5.5-inch 1080p display, 16MP camera, and 4GB of RAM if you opt for the 64GB model. Throw in an octa-core Snapdragon 625 chipset and there’s very little reason not to put it on your shortlist.

Many high-end features

9. Alcatel Idol 4S

Alcatel has become one of the best manufacturers of affordable Android devices. The Idol 4S asks you to pay a little more than its year-old sibling, but for that, you get a 5.5-inch 25660 x 1440 display, a Snapdragon 652 chipset, as much as 3GB of RAM, and a 16-megapixel camera. It even comes with a VR headset packaged inside the box.

10. Moto E 2015

If the Moto G is a little too much phone for you, take a step down to the Moto E. The Moto E has a lot in common with the Moto G, like the design, but the specs have been reduced quite a bit. You’re looking at a sub-720p display, only 1GB of RAM, and a very low-powered processor. Still, It’s hard to find a better phone for this insanely low price.

Price: $99

Key Features:

Good battery life
Stock Android
Incredibly affordable
BUY FROM AMAZON
Honorable Mention: ZTE ZMax Pro

While we believe this $99 smartphone provides an extreme amount of value for what you’re getting, there’s one thing that keeps it from getting into the top 10: it’s only available on one carrier in one country. As great a value as it is, it’s worthless if you can’t actually buy it. We’ll revisit its place on our list when or if ZTE ever confirms an unlocked model.

Price: $99 (after MetroPCS rebates)

Key Features:

Great display
Nice audio
Impressive battery life
